The development of characteristics or behaviours that help a child adjust in a social environment is known as Social Development. Emotional Development acts as a base for social development as it influences the child’s social behaviour and interactions. We can find huge differences in a child’s behaviour, some children are very active, outgoing, independent, explorative and curious while some may be shy, passive, dependent and withdrawn. Sometimes the same child may act differently in different situations.
Importance:
Socio-emotional development influences the social adjustment and emotional status of a child. It plays a vital role in a child’s overall performance. A child who is under emotional stress due to the reactions of others or situations around him, he will not be able to perform better. But, if a child is given encouragement and positive feedback, he may perform even better than a more capable child.
Here are some suggestions for teachers and parents to promote desirable Socio-Emotional behavior in a child:
● Children should be encouraged with praise or a pat on the back for any desirable behaviour.
● Teachers and parents should make a conscious effort not to create a conflict in the child’s mind by advising them something and doing the opposite.
● Children should not be given any sort of physical punishment. It creates humiliation for the child and the child imitates the aggressive behaviour of the adult.
● If the child has done something undesirable he should be explained how that act is undesirable and that it should not be repeated.
● Teachers or parents should be consistent in their reactions from one situation to another so that children are very clear about what is good and what is not.
● Parents or teachers should provide a favourable environment for the children by not being very authoritative or very strict with them.
● It is advised that parents/teachers should let the children have a clear and consistent idea of what is desirable/undesirable behaviour. Children should be encouraged to take decisions under the guidance of parents/teachers, to freely discuss their issues and maintain a trusting relationship with them.
Hence, a secure and trustworthy environment should be provided for the child both by parents and teachers so that the child adjusts accordingly. The major objective at the preschool level therefore is to help the child’s social development i.e. playing with others, helping others, good social manners, sharing and cooperating with others, waiting for one’s turn during activities etc.
