Outdoor Time for Children is Essential!

Published on October 12, 2019

Here’s Why
Children are naturally drawn to playing outside, as outdoor play has numerous benefits, it enhances large muscle  coordination. When children are outdoors, they develop both fine and gross motor skills. For example, running, jumping, climbing, digging and pushing improve gross motor skills and repairing, painting, tying, drawing help improve fine motor skills.

Preschoolers are very energetic and active, they have very curious minds that love to explore the world through play. Ensure your preschoolers have healthy physical activity, which helps them develop both physically and mentally. Physical activity for children includes playing actively, running, jumping, hiking, swimming or anything that gets the child moving. Outdoor play provides the opportunity for children to come out of four walls and be familiar with the outside environment.

Here are a few outdoor activities:

Water play:

It is one of the finest forms of creative play. It is very much liked by children, it promotes emotional growth, relieves pressures and tensions as it has a soothing nature. Child develops physical coordination, eye-hand coordination and fine motor control, for eg. to pour, squeeze and balance.

Sand play:

As sand play is often restricted at home, it is particularly offered at preschool with careful supervision. Sand play facilitates social interaction, imagination and emotional relief by digging and making moulds.

Gardening:

In the early childhood period gardening is for play and learning. Children are taught how to take care of a plant so that they develop a love for nature and learn how to care for it. Children are also made to perform activities like watering plants, planting trees, sowing seeds, pulling out unwanted plants.

Field trips:

Children learn best through their experiences because they are naturally curious, active, and eager to try new things. Field trips help young children learn about their environment, themselves and their communities through hands-on learning and discovery. Field trips improve children’s thinking and reasoning skills during the early childhood period and also promote the first-hand experience. Activities like visits to the library, fire department, Zoo, supermarket, railway station, parks, airport, post office, bus station, etc are organized in playschools.

Exposure to outdoors helps build immunity:

Have you ever stopped your kids from getting their hands dirty with mud or sand? If so, you may have to rethink your stand as many medical experts now believe that playing with mud is a great way to strengthen your child’s immunity.

Being exposed to dirt and mud, the immune system is exposed to various microbiota. It also has other advantages like the development of the sensory nervous system, fine motor skills and enhancing creativity. When exposed to outdoors body builds immunity and fights it better. In fact, street children are a lot healthier than those bought up in clean conditions.

Now that we have gotten a brief understanding of how outdoors play a vital role in a child’s life. Let us as adults play part in it and make sure they get the chance to explore these various outdoor avenues.
