11 Tips to ensure your child’s smooth transition to Main school from Preschool !

Published on April 6, 2016

Your childs growth comes with the bittersweet reminder that time flies by fast. It probably seems that your child just adjusted to preschool, and already its time for another transition. With the preschool years soon ending for Senior Kg, the transition anxiety is escalating in both parents and kids.

Here are some tips to help them prepare for the social and emotion transition ahead of them.

1) Talk to parents of older kids. When other parents share their experience, you will know what to expect from your child and new school.

2) Give time to say goodbye. As parents, we should also be aware of our kids’ emotions. Alongside the pride and joy, there are emotions of separation. It is the sadness of moving away from their favorite play home, missing their favorite teacher or separating from some of their childhood buddies. Let them have their last get together.

3) Ask your child questions like what are you most excited about for your new school? Remind your child of all the new and exciting things that they will do. This way you are making them comfortable with the change.

4) Meet with the new school team. Before your child begins school, take an opportunity to meet with his future teachers, sub-staff, nurse, administrator and security. This will help you know about the school practices.

5) Arrange for your child to meet his new teacher before school begins. Introduce your child with his teachers, guardians and help desk administrator. This prior meeting will remove the anxiety of starting the school year with unfamiliar faces.

6) Indicate your child the important locations in the new school, say bathrooms, classrooms, the lunch room, the main office, and the nurses office.

7) Inform the school of your child’s needs or allergies.

8) Teach your child routines needed for the new school.

9) Make note of all contact numbers of the school and also drop your contact number in the childs bag.

10) Learn about school rules and regulations.

11) Pat yourself! Youve put in lot of efforts to get your child to this stage. Take at least a few moments to reflect back on your journey to get your child outshine his first milestone.

Celebrate your childs growth and successes!
